Teaching Young Learners

The International Teacher Training Organization is also providing the Teaching English to Young Learners course, also well known as TEYL course.

The art of Teaching English to Young Learners is a specific skill which needs specific training to be performed effectively.

The majority of TEFL courses focus on teaching adults. This results in TEFL certificate holders who would like to teach children finding themselves without the necessary skills and ability to be able to teach Young Learners effectively.

The ITTO TEYL course aims at providing recently graduated EFL teachers or practicing teachers with the necessary skills, confidence and ability to be able to teach Young Learners to maximum effect.

The ITTO TEYL course provides a solid foundation in the methodology behind teaching YL. This foundation is consolidated with a combination of classroom observations and observed teaching practices.

With an ever increasing demand for TEYL certificate holders around the world, completing the course will give you the additional skills and qualification to Teach English to Young Learners anywhere in the world.

The course is open to qualified EFL teachers and those with previous teaching experience but no formal TEFL qualification. The course is also open to non native speakers of English who have reached a proficient command of the English language.

Course Features:

  • 40 hrs / 5 day course 3 hrs observing practising YL teachers 3 hrs of observed teaching practice with Young Learners 4 hrs of group feedback on teaching practice Guided lesson preparation time End of course examination,

Course Syllabus:

  • Language learning and language acquisition for children.

  • How do children learn English.

  • Understanding course materials.

  • Supplementary materials.

  • Choosing your materials.

  • Presenting and practicing language with children.

  • Teaching Listening.

  • Teaching Speaking.

  • Teaching Reading.

  • Teaching Writing.

  • Getting to know your class.

  • Classroom language.

  • Working with English sounds.

  • Working with English words.

  • Class Management.

  • Discipline.

  • Lesson Planning.

  • Making your own resources.

  • Projects.

  • Stories, plays, songs, rhymes.

  • Correction techniques.

  • Evaluation techniques.

  • Socio-cultural themes.

  • Learning strategies.

The course is divided into morning workshops and afternoon lesson preparation and teaching. Before teaching children on day two of the course, participants observe and critique three TEYL classes taught by qualified and experienced teachers of young learners.

Timetable:

Monday - Friday

9:15 AM - 2:00 PM

  • Plenary session on previous teaching observations and teaching practice.

  • Workshops on teaching methodology of teaching YL.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

  • Recess.

3:00 PM - 4:15 PM

  • Guided Lesson Preparation.
4:15 PM - 7:15 PM
  • Observed Teaching Practice
