TEFL in Latin America
By International Teacher Training Organization
Why work at home when you can be here?
Are you thinking about teaching English abroad? If so, an exciting adventure awaits you. Currently, the prospects for
certified TEFL teachers are excellent, especially in Latin America including South America. There are opportunities in
private language schools, corporations, public schools, universities and even private tutoring, but where do you begin?
Getting started can be very overwhelming. How will you find a job? How can you know that your employer is reputable?
Which country should you choose? Should you be certified? Don’t worry. The International Teacher Training
Organization (ITTO) can help you every step of the way.
Where do I begin?
Becoming certified to teach English is the most important thing you can do to make your journey a success. It will
open the doors to reputable schools all over Latin America and give you many more options when selecting an employer,
not to mention, it will set you apart from other applicants. In just four short weeks, you can become a certified TEFL
teacher at our facilities in beautiful Guadalajara, Mexico. While it is true that you can still find some schools in
South America that do not require their teachers to hold TEFL TESL TESOL certificates, these jobs often pay less than
half of what you could expect from institutions that require certification. Even in countries where it may be
commonplace to work without formal qualification, teachers who lack a specific grounding in TEFL TESL TESOL will
often be at a disadvantage. Schools that are not concerned with the quality of their teachers are more likely to
exploit their employees and their students. In some countries, certification is a pre-requisite for obtaining a
work visa -- yet another justification for doing some formal training before setting off.
What will I learn?
Increasing your employment options and ensuring quality from your employers are not the only reasons to get your
certificate. Training at a quality institution such as ITTO ensures that you have the skills required to actually
teach. Those without such training will find that speaking a language and teaching it are two very different things.
Internationally accepted guidelines state that a good TEFL TESL TESOL certification program must consist of 100 hours
of class time plus 6 hours of teaching practice. Our program goes well beyond these guidelines, offering 140 hours of
classroom training and 10 hours of monitored teaching practice. You will learn essential skills like how to assess the
needs of your future students and how to appeal to their motivations and learning styles, as well as classroom
management skills. You will have the amazing opportunity to teach 10 classes with real EFL students. These practice
sessions will be monitored and evaluated by trained TEFL professionals who will give you helpful feedback and
encouragement. Our comprehensive course will make you a confident instructor in a variety of classroom settings
and provide you with a wide range of ideas on how to teach, and perhaps just as critical, how not to teach.
How will I find a job?
Unlike almost any other program, ITTO will guarantee you a job in Mexico or help you to find a job in the
Latin American or South American country of your choice. While training at our school in historic downtown
Guadalajara, not only will you receive the training and certification that you need, but also job guidance for
the entire region. ITTO has valuable contacts and alumni working all over Latin America and South America. Consider
the possibilities of countries like Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela,
Ecuador, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Argentina.
The friendly ITTO staff members are experts at knowing what good schools are looking for. They will help you to create
an international TEFL resume, develop your interview skills, advise you on which jobs are best for you, and help you
